Santorum wins three states in Feb. 7 Republican primary

Rick Santorum won three Republican primaries on Feb. 7 - Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota

Rick Santorum won in all three Republican primaries yesterday. He overcame the rest of the candidates by winning with at least 40 percent of the vote in Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota.

According to CNN, the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania won Colorado with 40 percent of the vote, Minnesota with 45 percent of the vote and Missouri with 55 percent of the overall vote. Romney was the closest in Colorado, gaining 35 percent of the vote.

Up to this point, Santorum has suffered from low national poll numbers, says CNN, but is popular with grass-roots social conservatives because of his views on certain issues. Such issues include gay rights, marriage and abortion.

The New York Times said that Santorum’s victories represent “his first breakout moments in the Republican presidential contest since he belatedly scraped to the top in Iowa more than a month ago.” These wins, the article continues, will allow voters who may have dismissed him early on to take a second look.

So far, there have been seven primaries. Read more about the results of all of the 2012 primaries here.
